By using natural gas-driven refuse collection vehicles the company reduces noise and particulate matter emissions. Thereby, the BSR signals the importance of using environmentally friendly propulsion technologies already available in these days.
Measures
Since 2003 already the BSR – as the first company in Germany - has been using 50 collection vehicles driven by natural gas. The use of natural gas vehicles is promoted by funds of the Environmental Mitigation Programme (EMP) of the EU. To guarantee the daily use of the natural gas vehicles without any problems, the BSR has built a natural gas fuelling station in Malmöerstraße (district Pankow-Prenzlauer Berg).
Success
With these 50 collection vehicles a significant reduction of noise and particulate matter emissions has been achieved. The noise emission of natural gas driven vehicles is just half as much compared to diesel vehicles and the particulate matter emission is practically zero. The Benzol load has been reduced by 95 %. The potential of these natural gas vehicles to produce ozone is 60 times lower compared to vehicles with conventional propulsions.
