Procurement process
Next to aspect of cost-savings, sustainability and the reduction of CO2 are very important to the Fachklinik Wolletzsee. The business management is responsible for the purchase of electricity. The last electricity supplier (standard power) announced a considerable price increase for 2008. Mr. Janz used this for the termination of the ongoing contract in due time. Together with the Berlin Energy Agency and by using the procurement tools of GreenLabelsPurchase the criteria for the next power contract have been defined and a list of possible suppliers was elaborated.
Measures
Although in the medical sector the cost factor is an important decision criterion, the management has always been thinking about green power. The motto was: “If we can ever afford it, our power should be produced ecologically.” With this premise a limited invitation to tender was carried out.
Success
The tender was very successful. Since January 2008 the clinic is provided with CO2-free hydropower from the company NaturEnergie AG1. The evaluation of the five offers received showed, that NaturEnergie handed in the lowest price, even though close to the next offer. This shows, that green power doesn’t have to be more expensive. The next best offer is 0,6 % or 712 €/year more expensive. Buying green power from the company NaturEnergie is about 6,2 % (approx. 6.900 €/year) more expensive compared to the former contract. The reason lies in the general rise of power prices on the German market. But the offer is still cheaper than the old supplier would have been after the rise in 2008. The CO2-reduction by switching to green power accounts for about 529 t/year in comparison to the German power mix. Furthermore about 814 g of radioactive waste less is produced per year.
1 The product NaturEnergie Silber is certified by TÜV Nord. It ensures that the power is hydro power and generated in a sufficient amount. The building of new renewable energy plants is not required for that label.
