Overview

The Finnish Environment Institute (also known as SYKE, after the Institute's Finnish acronym) is both a research institute, and a centre for environmental expertise.

SYKE has developed an environmental management system (EMS) to reduce the negative environmental impacts of its own operations. EMS focuses on travelling, purchases, energy consumption, the use of paper, and waste management. Overall goals for procurement/consumption:

  • purchases should be minimised, and the purchases made should always be as environmental friendly as possible
  • the negative environmental impacts of paper consumption should be reduced
  • the negative environmental impacts of SYKEs property and equipment should also be reduced
