Target

  • environmental target: human toxicity and the effects on human health

  • target group: manufacturers of textile products (manufacturers of: fibres, textiles, clothes, accessories, prêt a porter, third party manufacturers)

Product/service group

It applies to finished textiles but also to intermediate products which cannot contain prohibited toxic substances or other dangerous substances (heavy metals, pesticides, etc.) to more than a certain amount, neither they can cause too high emissions during the use phase. It applies also to the textile firms for their productive sites and processes. It does not apply to the cotton production.

Awarding Institution & criteria

The international awarding institution is the International Association for Research and Test in the field of Textile Ecology (Oeko-Tex International) located in Zurich (CH) on the premises of Textex. In Italy, Centrocot is the only institute authorised to issue the “Oeko-Tex Standard 100” label.

Control mechanisms

The certification is valid one year, with the possibility to be prolonged for an other year. After the certification procedure should be re-run. The control system forecast the inspection of the firms to verify the certified product and some aspects of their production.

Charges

No monthly and/or yearly costs are forecast. The applying company should pay provision fees.

Relevance on the market

The label was established in 1992, and since1994 in Italy. From the beginning of the scheme around 27.000 certificates were awarded around the world to 5.000 companies, mostly in Europe. In Italy from 1994 Centrocot certified about 3.000 certificates to about 500 firms. Italy is third for the number of certificates after Germany and Switzerland.

Today Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is the most applied textile eco-label in Europe.
