Benefits

Several analyses on green procurement show the environmental benefit.
The European Commission has co funded a research project - called Relief - to assess the potential environmental benefits if green public procurement were to be widely adopted across the EU. The findings produced the following conclusions. If all public authorities all over the EU would by green electricity, this would lead to CO2 savings of about 60 million tonnes, which is equivalent to 18 % of the EU’s greenhouse gas reduction commitment under the Kyoto Protocol. Nearly the same saving could be achieved if public authorities opted for buildings of high environmental quality.

The other important aspect is that green procurement allows saving money when life-cycle costs of a contract is considered.
