Overview

Public authority

Environmental protection is a central criterion of the procurement regulations of office devices in Hanover. By consequent realisation, 15,000 eco-friendly devices have already been purchased.

Hanover has been engaged in climate protection projects for years. Already in 1992, Hanover decided to reduce CO2 emissions according to the goals of the Kyoto Protocol. To achieve these goals, the department for Environment and Stadtwerke Hanover had developed a communal climate protection programme for energy, transport and waste management, which was enacted by the city cousil in May 1996.

Procurement process

The administration’s procurement is organised centrally. One central unit of the administration supervises the procurement process. Hanover has developed guidelines for procurement and the criteria for environmental protection and energy efficiency are obligatory for every tender.

Measures

Hanover only purchases PCs, screens, printers, fax machines– and copy machines which fulfill the criteria of the labels Energy Star, Blue Angel, Eco-Label and the TCO Label respectively. An alternative offer of 15% of green power has been the economically most advantageous one and therefore got the tender.

Success

Within the last years Hanover bought about 15,000 devices of screens, PCs, printers, copy- and fax machines. This leads to estimated energy savings of about 250,000 kWh per year. The cost savings add up to round about 32,500 € (0.13 €/kWh) per year.
