Overview
Administration of ViernheimIn 1994 Viernheim was awarded as “Brundtland-City”. Viernheim was the first city in Hesse which received this award. In 1999 Viernheim appointed an energy manager and installed an energy management system for the buildings owned or operated by the town. It was possible to reduce the CO2 emissions until 2002 by 17 % compared with the situation in 1990. The purchase of energy efficient office equipment is another step to save more energy.

Procurement process
Viernheim has installed a central unit for procurement issues. Viernheim set up guidelines for procurement that include aspects about environmental protection and energy efficiency. The guidelines have to be taken into account together with all legal regulations when a tender is undertaken.
Measures
The administration of the City of Viernheim takes the criteria of the Label Energy Star, Blue Angels or TCO into account when they purchase PC’s, screens, printers and copy- or fax machines.
Success
Every year Vienheim saves 7.500 kWh due to the purchase of meanwhile 230 energy efficient office equipment. The cost savings add up to 1.000 € every year (0,13 €/kWh). 5 tons CO2 emissions are saved every year.
