ENEA is the Italian government agency responsible for the areas of new technology, energy and the environment. It is the largest research, development and dissemination body in Italy in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Approximately 500 technicians and scientists are employed in that activity with an annual budget of more than 60 million EURO. ENEA is also the main technical support of the Italian governmental and local institutions (as, i.e., the industry and environment Ministries, and Regional councils) for the energy/environmental themes and relevant policy planning.

Beyond its research activities, ENEA is currently involved in the Government efforts to comply with Kyoto protocol objects, in demand side policy actions and in technical studies for the revision of energy policy measures (energy efficiency requirements and energy labelling schemes) for domestic end-uses.
ENEA is strongly involved in RUE policies and measures for the improvement of energy efficiency for end-uses and buildings, has regional offices (CCEI) covering the whole of Italy for the dissemination of energy efficient technologies and is member of the EnR network.
