Procurement process
The detailed processes of purchasing energy efficient products are defined as work instructions in the HVB Group’s “purchaser’s handbook”. The employees are regularly informed in detail about contents and improvements in the range of procurement.
The department of management of sustainability developed guidelines for environmentally and sustainable procurement together with experts in charge. The procurement division is then obliged to integrate the criteria into the bid documents. The procurement department is also responsible for the evaluating of the offers.
Measures
Criteria like Energy Star, GEEA/GED, Blue Angel, Eco-Label and TCO are considered for the procurement of monitors, printers, copiers and fax machines both for preparation of the bid and the evaluation of the offers. A part of the criteria is so-called “must criteria”.
Suppliers have to provide information on eco-management and social and work legal questions via standardised questionnaire for new acquisitions respectively new contracts. All explanations have to be proved by significant documents by the supplier and will be included into the purchase contract.
The standardised forms for product-specific demands have proved to be efficient and will therefore be developed for further product groups.
Success
Compared to the old monitors (TV tubes), the purchase of 27.340 flat screens with power consumption of only 38 Watt (lull load) has lead to savings of 3.700.000 kWh electricity overall, respectively to 2.500 tons CO2 per year. Using average electricity costs of 13 cent/kWh it would correspond to cost savings of 450.000 Euro every year.
