Procurement process

The central procurement unit organizes the procurement process when a lot of IT equipment has to be purchased. An internal procurement guideline includes obligatory criteria for the environment protection, energy savings and energy efficiency. These criteria have to be considered during the procurement process. If only few pieces of IT equipment have to be purchased than the procurement process is done on a decentralized level.

Measures

All of the office equipment (PC, Screens/Monitors, printers, fax- and copy machines) fulfil the criteria of the Label Energy Star, Blue Angel, Eco-Label or TCO-Label which had been purchased in the late nineties of the last century.

Success

The energy consumption of screens is reduced by 60 % through the change from valve monitors to flat screens. Every flat screen saves 90 kWh compared to valve monitors, yearly. The Ministry now saves 45.000 kWh per year due to the change of monitor types.

This amount corresponds to annual financial savings of approximately 6.000 € (0,13 €/kWh). Furthermore, flat sreens have a longer physical lifetime and can be recycled more easy. Concerning this, the lifetime balance is environmentally more friendly.
