DHL includes express shipping, international transports and airfreight consignment and integrates the Deutsche Post, DHL and Postbank companies. It offers via the global network tailored, customer-focused solutions for management and the transport of goods and information. DHL owns 76.200 vehicles with a rising number of alternative powered vehicles.

Procurement process

The central sector “Politics and Sustainability“ defines the strategies of sustainability and develops the principles and guidelines for it. DHL as a subsidiary of the concern also organises and implements self-responsible projects. With a six step plan, aligned on a sustainable logistic network, DHL establishes a certificated environment management system after ISO 14001 for all European office branches. The experiences won serve as a model for the introduction of the concept in all office branches of Deutsche Post World Net.

Measures

In autumn 2005, DHL purchased the first 50 natural gas vehicles in Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Bremen and Düsseldorf. In 2006, DHL expanded its fleet of natural gas vehicles, consisting now of 170 vehicles. In addition to that, DHL ordered 100 diesel vehicles with particulate filters. Adjacent to the use of environment-friendly vehicles, DHL optimised its routeing and trains its drivers for fuel saving. In the scope of the European project FIDEUS (Freight Intelligent Delivery of Goods on European Urban Spaces), DHL, together with other logistic companies and car manufacturers, has been developing efficient and eco-friendly alternatives for delivery transport in city centres between 2005 and 2008. New vehicle technologies with innovative appendages in the field of logistic and transport management are combined in this project. To be more specific, three new types of vehicles are developed and tested within three years. Furthermore, DHL offers low-emission and emission-neutral products and services under the brand name GoGreen - these products are globally unique so far.

Success

With the use of modern particulate filters, the particulate matter decreases about 85%; using natural gas vehicles produces hardly any particle emissions.
